José María Olazábal Manterola was born on February 5, 1966, in Hondarribia, Spain. He was born to Gaspar Olazábal. At the age of 16, he represented Spain in competing in the Eisenhower Trophy in 1982 and did so in 1984 too.
José María Olazábal won the Boys Amateur Championship at Glenbervie Golf Club, Scotland in 1983. In 1984, he won The Amateur Championship at Formby Golf Club, Liverpool, England and later won the British Youths Open Amateur Championship, at Ganton Golf Club.
José María Olazábal became the first player to have won the British Boy’s, Youths and Amateur titles in a career. He holds the world record distance for a completed putt and was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009.
José María Olazábal captained Europe’s Ryder Cup team to a narrow victory over the US in 2012. He was presented the Prince of Asturias Award on 19 June 2013 in recognition of his accomplishments as a player and leader of the 2012 Ryder Cup team.
