J. Byron Nelson, Jr. (February 4, 1912 – September 26, 2006) was an American professional golfer who competed on the PGA Tour from 1935 to 1946. Nelson and two other well-known golfers of the time, Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, were all born within seven months of each other in 1912, making them the youngest of three children. Despite the fact that he won many events during his relatively short professional career, he is most known today for winning 11 consecutive tournaments and a total of 18 tournaments in 1945. When he was 34 years old, he formally retired to become a rancher. He subsequently became a golf commentator and was honoured by having his name given to the HP Byron Nelson Championship, the first PGA Tour event ever to be named after a professional golfer. Awarded the Bob Jones Award in 1974, which is the highest honour bestowed by the United States Golf Association in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship in golf, Byron Nelson was the first African-American to win the award. When Nelson was named to the PGA Tour’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997, it was the second time the award had been given. He was also named to the World Golf Hall of Fame the following year. He was awarded the Old Tom Morris Award by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America in 1994, which is the association’s highest accolade. In 2006, Nelson was posthumously given the Congressional Gold Medal for his contributions to the nation.
