Elwood Edwards (born November 6, 1949) is a voice over actor from the United States. He is best known as the voice of the Internet service provider America Online, which he began recording in 1989 and has been in continuous rotation since. The phrases “Welcome,” “You’ve got mail,” “You’ve got photos,” “You’ve got voice mail,” and “File done” are some of his favourite welcomes. Edwards’ wife overheard the CEO of online service Q-Link, Steve Case, explain how he wished to include a voice into the company’s user interface in 1989. Edwards’ voice debuted on AOL’s new show in October, and the rest is history. Besides The Simpsons (where he supplied the voice of a virtual doctor who told Homer, “You’ve got leprosy”) and the movie You’ve Got Mail, his voice has also been heard in advertisements for the movie You’ve Got Mail.
The company AOL transformed him into an AOL-BOT that could be utilised in chat rooms. He began working in radio while still in high school. After high school, he pursued a career in television, where he worked as a live booth announcer.
